The Dorfnest overpass project is a key project aimed at increasing the capacity of the suburban railway line between Zurich and Winterthur. The railway bridge is being constructed with the assistance of a rolled supporting structure integrated into a protective tunnel. The new line layout required an approximately 430m-long pile wall in a slope cutting, around 250m of earthen ramps and some 300m of road cutaway.
With the new 200m-long bridge, trains will be able to cross the airport rail line without having to intersect with it. This avoids passenger and goods traffic having to wait. The bridge was put into operation in December 2018.
The passage of suburban railway, intercity and goods trains along this stretch will be decongested by the new rail bridge.
