Spectacular major project.
The renovation of the more than 1km long, very narrow access road in the Muotathal took place between 2013 and 2015. Initially, loose material had to be removed and the mountain-side rock face secured with an anchored jetcrete wall. Only then could permanent anchored concrete ribs (buttresses) for the new road surface be formed, reinforced and concreted on the valley side.
The majority of the works took place at great heights, atop a vertical concrete wall up to 80m high. Four angular retaining walls around 10m high were constructed along a 280m long section to the mountain side. On 27 November 2015, the lifeline of Muotathal was at last freely traversable, and in June 2016 the project was completed.
