PORR wins tender to build Obervermunt II power plant

Vienna, 3 February 2014 – PORR has been awarded the tender to build the Obervermunt II power plant in Vorarlberg as part of a consortium. The total value is EUR 120m; PORR holds a 30% stake. Construction is set to start in May 2014 once the snow has thawed and is set to finish in December 2017.

The Obervermunt II pumped storage power plant will have a capacity of 360MW for turbine and pump operations, making it the second largest power plant on the River Ill in Vorarlberg. It will be built underground in Montafon Valley between the Silvretta and Vermunt reservoirs and is designed as a parallel power plant to the existing Obervermunt plant.

The mountain construction site is 1,700m above sea level and work will also continue in winter, when all supplies can only be delivered via a ropeway for people and materials. A comprehensive system of tunnels and galleries will be needed for the power plant’s construction, as well as a cavern for the powerhouse. The material excavated in the course of construction work will be processed into concrete aggregate.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss is delighted with the tender: “Being awarded this technically and logistically demanding project once again underlines PORR’s exceptional reputation in power plant construction”.
